Accessing and Configuring Your Router

Your router serves as the hub for your home Wi-Fi network. If you ever wish to make changes to your network, whether it is by performing an update, setting a password, or simply changing your Wi-Fi network name, it is here you will do it. Before you can do any of that, you will need to access your router.

Find Your Router’s IP Address The first step to accessing your router is to find your IP address. is common, so it is worth a try. If that one doesn’t work for you, you can often find your router’s IP address detailed on the base of your router.

Access Your Router Settings

With your IP address in hand, you are now ready to access your router’s main page. Open up your browser of choice, whether Google Chrome, Firefox, or some other. Where you would normally type in a web address, type in or whichever IP address your router uses. If you have the right address, you will receive a prompt to log in. If this is your first time accessing your router, the username and password should be the default ones for your router. Typically “admin” is the username, and “password” is the password. If that doesn’t work, you can again refer to the label on the base of your router. That should have the login details stated.

It’s Time to Change Your Router Settings

By this point, you should have used your router’s IP address and login details to access its main page. You are now free to change whichever settings you see fit. If you ever make a mistake, you can reset your router back to factory settings and start again. However, it’s always good to keep things simple for the first time. A good starting point would be: Change Those Login Details

Changing your login details away from the default ones will secure your router. You can often find this field in the admin tab or similar on the router’s settings page.

Apply a WI-FI Password

Securing your router is all well and good, but you should also secure the Wi-Fi network it provides. That way, only people you allow can use your internet. Search for the wireless setting on the router’s settings page. Here you will find the security settings. Change the security settings to WPA2-PSK [AES] and input your desired password.

Your Router Is Secure, and You Are Free to Explore With those two settings changed, your router is secure. Now, you can explore the other settings of your router as you desire.
